VOICE

711 or 800-421-1220
Standard telephone users can easily initiate calls to people with hearing loss or speech disability who use text telephones (TTYs) or voice carry-over (VCO or CapTel) phones.

The relay service offers two ways to connect two callers
through a relay operator.  Select each of two ways
for more information:

HOW TO CONTACT A PERSON WHO USES
A TEXT TELEPHONE (TTY)

Dial 711 (or 1-800-421-1220).

You will hear a recording telling you to press "1" to make a relay call.

Give the relay operator the area code and telephone number you wish to call and any further instructions.
The relay operator will process your call. When the TTY caller answers the call, the relay operator will type what you say to the TTY caller.

Make sure to say "Go Ahead" when it's the TTY caller's turn to respond.
The TTY caller will read what was said on the device. The relay operator will then read aloud everything the TTY caller types to you.

TIPS FOR HEARING CALLERS:

  • Be sure to talk directly to your caller.
  • Avoid saying "tell him" or "tell her."
  • Say "GA" or "Go Ahead" at the end of your response.

HOW TO CONTACT A PERSON WITH A SPEECH DISABILITY

When the call is connected, just begin your conversation with the STS user.
The relay operator will revoice what the Speech-to-Speech (STS) user says if needed.
Dial 711 (or 1-877-662-4234).

Give the relay operator the area code and telephone number of the person with a speech disability that you wish to call.
